What happens after the Flop
Before the flop, you have only seen two cards out of seven. The flop gives you three more cards making it five out of seven resulting in you having a better strength of hands; more so than a turn or river but with the exception of a flush or a straight.
The questions that come into play after a flop are whether you should bet or fold or if there is a huge pot, what should you do to stay and get it. Frequently what results in is that you put in a raise before the flop with premium cards that have an opportunity to turn into a big hand, or you call a bet in late position with a weak hand and once you see the flop, you have nothing. In this case, you must check and fold. That is why we play speculative hands in late position for one bet. They will not usually turn into anything so you don't want to put in a lot of money. The large premium hands will however end up turning into a good hand more often, so you raise with those to get more money in the pot because you expect to win it. Of course you could also find this out by using a poker calculator.
After you see the flop, one of many things happen in Online Poker-
- You have nothing, no pair, no draw to a straight or flush; there are no cards on the board that are higher than yours. The decision in this case then is to simply check and fold to a bet. No matter where you play, you will be able to find poker players who play on with their hands even though they hit nothing on the flop. Keep track of these players - you will win a lot of money from them.
- You have a huge hand so you either bet or raise. Sometimes you may want to slow play that is just check and call a bet. The worst thing that can happen is that you hit your huge hand while someone else hits a very good second best hand and would have raised, so you cost yourself money.
- You have a good, but not great hand in which case you might want to try for a check/raise in order to face people with calling two bets. This can only happen if you think someone will bet after you check. If not then you should bet. Try and get players with an Ace, King, or Queen to fold. Although unlikely, some of them will call all the way to the end with an Ace and any other card hoping that you are bluffing. You may however get someone to fold small cards that would have turned into a straight, a flush, or 2 pair if you had let them draw for free which is a good thing.
- You have a mediocre hand. If there are several people in the pot and there is a bet before you play - fold. If it is checked around and no card comes on the turn that serves anybody, try a bet and see if they all fold. This is most likely to work if there are only a few people in the pot. You must also see how the players play. If you have a player that will call to the end with a slightly better hand, it may not be worth a bet. Also, if you do bet on the turn, and get raised - fold. If you often play with the same players, it could be an advantage to keep a poker database of previous hands and how each person played them.
- You either have no made hand or a very weak made hand but there is hope for improvement. To make a decision with drawing hands, you need to consider pot odds, implied odds, and your odds of making the hand you are drawing to and winning. There are many more factors that need to be taken into account in each poker situation like other players' playing style, position, size of the pot etc.
